Travel back in time to the historic Roxy Theater. The new Roxy, once completed, will offer movies and will be a premier location for movies and cultural events for this end of Kanawha, and surrounding counties.
Dinner and a movie
The Roxy Theater, located at 16 Maywood Avenue in the heart of Clendenin’s historic downtown, sits amidst a cluster of cultural and commercial landmarks. Its proximity to downtown makes it an ideal venue for drawing visitors and boosting foot traffic in Clendenin’s core.
1000 year flood can't stop us
After The Flood of 2016 devastated the Town of Clendenin and halted the progress on the Roxy Theater. In 2010, with grant money through the State Historic Preservation Office, 25045-ANC began the work of replacing the roof on the Roxy Theater, repairing the exterior walls that were damaged, and fixing the marquee on the front of the building.
All progress on the interior of the Roxy however, was destroyed by floodwater.
25045 - ANC is committed to raising the funds necessary to complete the interior of the Roxy Theater as a multi-cultural center for movies, theater, dance, and musical performances, educational classes and presentations for youth and adults, and other community events. Architectural plans have been drawn for a 100+ -seating facility that includes ADA-compliant seating.
Say you donated!
25045 - ANC received grants (WV Department of Arts, Culture, and History of the WV Commission on the Arts and the State Historic Preservation Office) and large donations (Dr. O.M. Harper and Ruth A. Harper Foundation and Martha Gaines and Russell B. Wehrle Memorial Foundation) to implement the next two phases of restoring the Roxy Theater.
Recent phases of construction included removing and repairing the crushed terra cotta sewer line, replacing the currently sloped lobby floor to comply with ADA standards, installing ADA-compliant restrooms, and building the ADA-compliant concession/ticketing/kitchen area. The next steps will require additional concrete to adjust the currently-sloped theater floor to comply with ADA standards and install a flood door at the bottom of the theater.
Let's bring it home
There is no theater in the Elk River area; the nearest is The Elk Theater in Sutton and The Robey Theatre in Spencer.
A multi-cultural center in Clendenin will furnish a dual benefit of recreational and educational activities for residents, employment, and increased downtown traffic benefiting local businesses.
